While deciding what she would wear to the third annual Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles, which took place on December 3,\u00a0Kaia Gerber<\/a> turned to designer Hedi Slimane for help. Slimane, whom the 22-year-old described via e-mail as one of her \u201cgreatest teachers,\u201d is the creative director at Celine, where Gerber serves as a brand ambassador. But when it came to the strapless polka-dot dress the\u00a0Bottoms<\/em>\u00a0star chose for her red carpet look, the creative input came from both sides of the aisle.

\u201cI knew I wanted to do something that felt very classic Hollywood,\u201d Gerber said. \u201cI saw a beautiful polka-dot dress that walked Hedi\u2019s first show at Celine and that posed as inspiration for this gown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audrey Hepburn in\u00a0Sabrina<\/em>\u00a0also served as a central point of inspiration for the look. \u201c[Keeping Audrey top of mind] was so interwoven throughout this whole process,\u201d Gerber said of the actress. \u201cI wanted to use her essence, since I have always loved Audrey Hepburn\u2014she was one of the first women who introduced me to cinema and sparked my passion for acting.\u201d Indeed, the tulip shape of Gerber\u2019s taffeta black-and-cream gown calls to the silhouette of Hepburn\u2019s iconic dress\u2014a column with an organza overskirt\u2014designed in 1953.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor the hair and makeup, I really wanted something that would complement the dress and the era it references without being too on the nose,\u201d Gerber explained, adding an au courant bow in her hair to give the look a dose of modernity. As for accessories, Gerber\u2019s stylist, Danielle Goldberg, pulled Celine slingbacks and a teeny, sparkling minaudi\u00e8re from the French house\u2014which shimmered alongside Gerber\u2019s centerpiece jewelry: a Tiffany & Co. diamond engagement ring worn on her pinky, which matched her diamond stud earrings, also from Tiffany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having the opportunity to wear a gown that Hedi and I dreamed up, we wanted to find accessories that married our vision,\u201d Gerber said. \u201cWhat better way to marry a vision than with a Tiffany\u2019s pinky engagement ring? I loved the tie-in with Audrey there, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gerber starred opposite Rachel Sennott<\/a> and Ayo Edebiri<\/a> in the comedy Bottoms<\/em>\u2014and, for the record, is still in touch with her cast mates in a group chat. (\u201cThe Letterboxd reviews [of the movie] have been some of our favorite things to share back and forth,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople are so creative and funny.\u201d) She\u2019s currently gearing up for awards season, and has a few films in mind that she\u2019d love to see take home a trophy. \u201cI can\u2019t speak about films this year without talking about Past Lives<\/em>, a deeply moving film that is imprinted on my heart and has carried on with me since I watched it,\u201d she said. \u201cCeline Song<\/a>, Greta Lee\u2014everyone involved in that film captures the human condition with so much raw beauty. I am also gently haunted by Sandra H\u00fcller\u2019s incredible performance<\/a>in Anatomy of a Fall<\/em>. And, of course, I have to mention the brave and boundlessly free performances and filmmaking by Emma Stone and Y\u00f3rgos L\u00e1nthimos<\/a> in Poor Things<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The one actress Gerber will forever stan just so happened to be the person she was most eager to encounter at the Academy Museum Gala. \u201cI was most excited to see Meryl Streep,\u201d she said. \u201cNo explanation necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
