Zayn Malik was born Zain Javadd Malik on 12 January 1993 in Bradford<\/a>, West Yorkshire<\/a>, to an immigrant Pakistani<\/a> Muslim<\/a> father, Yaser Malik, and a White British mother of English<\/a> and Irish<\/a> descent, Trisha Malik (n\u00e9e Brannan), who converted to Islam upon marriage<\/a>. Malik has one older sister, Doniya, and two younger sisters, Waliyha and Safaa.[<\/a><\/sup>Despite having an Islamic<\/a> upbringing, he no longer identifies as a Muslim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malik grew up in East Bowling, Bradford<\/a>, in a working-class family  and neighbourhood.[11]<\/a><\/sup> He attended Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School (now Tong Leadership Academy<\/a>) in Bradford. As a teenager, he took performing arts courses and appeared in school productions. He grew up listening to his father’s urban music<\/a> records, primarily R&B<\/a>, hip hop<\/a>, and reggae<\/a>.[11]<\/a><\/sup> He wrote raps<\/a> when he was at school  and sang on stage for the first time when singer Jay Sean<\/a> visited his school.
